Bouygues slashes jobs; French govt repeats call for consolidation

first_img Bouygues Telecom, which runs the third-largest mobile operator in France, announced plans to cut its workforce by more than 1,500 as hopes of consolidation in the country’s fiercely-competitive mobile market were dashed this week.Iliad, the owner of smallest French mobile operator Free, failed to strike an agreement to take over Bouygues Telecom. Talks between Iliad and Orange have also reportedly floundered.Arnaud Montebourg, France’s economy minister, repeated his call to reduce the number of mobile network operators from four to three.Speaking at a telecoms conference organised by Les Echos newspaper, and quoted by Reuters, Montebourg said he wanted to bring to an end the “destructive spiral” of falling prices. “I am calling on all players to find other solutions than job cuts.”Bouygues is struggling in the French market. In the first three months of 2014 the operator racked up an operating loss of €19 million. In a statement, Bouygues, announced a “transformation plan designed to secure an independent future” after a shareholding meeting. On top of the job cuts, which represents around 15 per cent of the company’s 9,000-strong workforce, Bouygues said it would continue to invest in 4G and be “very aggressively-priced” on fixed broadband, as well as strengthen customer support. Stores are to be modernised, while in-store employees and customer advisers are not to be affected by the redundancy plan.Bouygues said job cuts were part of plans to achieve annual cost savings of €300 million by 2016. The operator has already achieved €600 million in annual savings over the past three years, according to the Financial Times. The re-organisation, said the operator, would take shape from 2015 and allow the company to emerge as a “viable and credible player”. The spirit of your city

The spirit of your city

first_imgINTRO: Alstom Transport’s Citadis low-floor tram family was unveiled at La Rochelle on September 2. Chris Jackson took a rideON A WARM sunny afternoon, a dark blue low-floor tram decorated with seagulls is being put through its paces on the Alstom test track in the French port of La Rochelle. Around 500 km to the southeast, an identical car undergoing commissioning trials is tantalising the citizens of Montpellier awaiting the opening of their city’s first light rail line. The two cars are the first examples of Citadis 300, the light rail representative in Alstom’s Optionic Design range. Five cities have already signed up for Citadis, bringing the order total to 121 with further options for 47. Close behind the third Montpellier car on the Aytré production line are the first vehicles for Orléans and Lyon, while cars for Dublin and Valenciennes are on the drawing board. Montpellier placed its order on July 27 1997, and the first car was delivered two years and three days later.Marketed as ’the spirit of your city’, Citadis is intended to offer unique designer-styled vehicles for each customer, with totally different cab ends, whilst minimising production costs through the incorporation of standard components and equipment modules. These draw heavily on the best existing designs within the group, such as the motored bogies from the Alstom-LHB cars for Magdeburg, the Onix IGBT-based traction drives and the Agate microprocessor control system. The Montpellier cars have 70% low floors, with a complex mix of slopes and steps to carry the gangway over the power bogies to reach low-floor entrances behind the cab at each end. Wheel wells and equipment are located in boxes under the seats, leaving the interior clear to give a feeling of spaciousness. The main low-floor area at the centre of the car includes space for wheelchairs, prams, and bicycles. This includes a low-floor gangway through the articulated centre section, which is carried on an unpowered Arpège truck with four independent wheels; controversially this has no primary suspension, which poses questions about ride quality. The 100% low-floor version selected by Lyon will use an Arpège truck with individual hub motors (Metro Report 99 p21) . Citadis 300 cars are available in various lengths from 22 to 43 m. Emphasising the designer-led nature of Optionic Design, the Montpellier, Orléans and Lyon cars are all of different widths (Table I), though destined for new light rail lines which could easily have been constructed to common specifications. Alstom says this reflects the flexibility of the concept to suit existing cities with differing standards, but in future the company may try to influence buyers towards standardisation using price. To suit the high level of flexibility in the concept, Alstom has developed a complex body structure formed of pre-assembled modules. These can be built and tested ’off-line’ and are then bolted and riveted together at a late stage in the production process. Critical to the structure are a linear underframe and roof welded from alumnium extrusions. The high-floor areas over the powered bogies are steel to provide additional strength. Vertical frames can be located at any point along the sides to carry the door modules, which come complete with leaves, mechanism and controls. Aluminium end rings complete the structure, onto which can be bolted a complete cab assembly or articulation.Driver protection in the event of a collision is provided by a circular bar at knee height designed to withstand a 200 kN compression load. A reinforced side wall structure with horizontal members at seat level provides additional side impact protection. To prove the concept, a Citadis bodyshell has been fatigue tested to 10 million cycles. Despite the restricted space under the floors, Alstom has found space for 100mm thickness of sound insulation above the motor bogies, bringing the predicted interior noise level down to 65 dB(A) at 50 km/h.The bolted body structure allows for rapid repair by replacement; Alstom expects to be able to change a window in 10min and a complete side panel in just 20min. Within the structure, most equipment is arranged as plug-in pull-out modules with standard interfaces, allowing inverter controls, traction modules and other elements to be replaced in minutes. The company is also offering a centralised parts service with guaranteed delivery times, which would enable cities to minimise the cost of holding spares.A growing familyUnder the Optionic Design programme, the Citadis family is being expanded to encompass other low-floor LRV designs. Thus the all-steel cars being built by Konstal in Katowice for Warszawa will form the basis of the Citadis 100 being offered to Gdansk and Katowice. The stainless-steel Magdeburg design from Alstom-LHB in Salzgitter will be transformed into Citadis 200, whilst the Aytré family are all grouped under the Citadis 300 brand. Finally, Alstom is planning a Citadis 500 for dual-mode operation on tram and heavy rail corridors.Alstom is currently bidding to supply Citadis in Istanbul, Melbourne, Bern, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Bordeaux. Once the production lines are rolling at Aytré, plants at Barcelona, Salzgitter and Katowice and perhaps in Brazil will be equipped for local assembly.TABLE: Table I. Visit: https://subscribe.premiersports.tv/ Andrea Belotti insists the Torino players are firmly behind coach Walter Mazzarri as “we showed this team are still alive” against Juventus. Another derby defeat to the Old Lady at the Grande Torino has put Mazzarri under pressure and the Granata are still without a win in Serie A since the 2-1 victory over Milan in late September. Despite that, Belotti reassured his boss he still had the full support of the club’s dressing room to come through this difficult spell. “We confronted ourselves and some of us have let out what we kept inside,” the striker told Corriere Torino. “After speaking about it, we have understood and got to know each other better. We have released ourselves from bad thoughts and, against Juventus, we showed this team are still alive. “The whole squad are still behind Mazzarri, we always have been. And on the pitch against Juventus, we demonstrated this.” Torino desperately need to bounce back this weekend against Brescia, given they are just four points off the teams inside the relegation zone.last_img read more

Rutgers becomes 14th member of the Big Ten

Rutgers becomes 14th member of the Big Ten

The Big Ten Conference’s footprint now extends up and down the mid-Atlantic region. One day after admitting the University of Maryland to the league, Big Ten Conference expansion continued Tuesday with the approval of Rutgers University’s application. Rutgers, nicknamed the Scarlet Knights, became the 14th team in the modern history of the Big Ten. Rutgers president Robert L. Barchi announced Rutgers’ “unanimous” admittance to the conference along with athletic director Tim Pernetti and Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany during a Tuesday afternoon press conference on the Rutgers campus in Piscataway, N.J., about 37 miles outside of New York City. When Rutgers will join as an official member, however, has yet to be determined as of Tuesday afternoon. Barchi said the university’s move is to “exactly the right conference.” “The Big Ten is really where Rutgers belongs,” Barchi said Tuesday. Delany, who went to high school in Newark, N.J., welcomed Rutgers with open arms. “It’s full circle for me to back here today,” Delany said. “Today, I’m all Rutgers. Yesterday, I was all Maryland.” As part of the move, Rutgers will depart the Big East Conference. The Scarlet Knights football program joined the Big East in 1991. In 1995, Rutgers began to compete in the Big East in all sports. Delany said Rutgers should work with the Big East to seal its entry date to the Big Ten. The conference’s divisional alignments, Delany said, haven’t been set. On Monday, Maryland became the 13th team in modern Big Ten history when its Board of Regents voted “overwhelmingly” to approve the university’s application to the Big Ten. Current Big Ten university presidents then assembled for a Monday teleconference to unanimously approve the school’s admittance. Maryland’s move to the Big Ten will take effect July 1, 2014. Ohio State students, though, are divided on the conference’s recent expeditions in expansion. “They’re more worried about the Rutgers and Maryland teams’ market than the actual quality,” said Brian Tebay, a third-year in sports industry. Erik Smason, a third-year in business, said the addition of the two teams helps the conference. “I think it’s good for the Big Ten,” he said. “I think it’s more competition although it does dilute the competition because the teams coming in aren’t as good as the core teams.” Rutgers, which was founded in 1766, becomes the oldest university in the Big Ten. Ohio State, which was established in 1870, is the conference’s youngest. Megan Sharp contributed to this article. read more

Le Saux Sarri madness at Chelsea isnt working anymore

Le Saux Sarri madness at Chelsea isnt working anymore

first_imgEx-Chelsea star Graeme Le Saux believes change is inevitable for Maurizio Sarri if he is to become a success story in the Premier League.Upon arriving from Napoli last summer, Sarri enjoyed a dream start as Chelsea coach by winning his opening five Premier League fixtures and remaining unbeaten for up to 12 games. But things have quickly changed at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea dropping out of the title battle and even the top-four in the standings on the back of five defeats in 12 league games.Things hit a new low for the Italian coach on Wednesday night when Chelsea were thrashed 4-0 by Bournemouth, which left a “frustrated” Sarri unable to explain what had happened.Speaking of Sarri’s current struggles at Chelsea, Le Saux suggested that he’s playing system has now been sussed out and added that the former Napoli boss must learn to “adapt” in a similar way to what Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have done.“The problem with Chelsea is that as soon as they lose a few games, people start talking and a manager goes,” Le Saux told the Daily Express.“That is their legacy. I hope that does not happen again.“I am not saying that Sarri should change his principles. I love to see teams playing it out from the back and passing the ball. He did a fantastic job at Napoli.“Is Sarri prepared to have a bumpy ride like the one he is going through because he believes that the end result is worth it? It is a risky path, for me.”Le Saux added: “Sarri has to adapt. He has to be willing to change his system – otherwise, his problems are just going to get worse.“They say that one definition of madness is that if something is not working, you keep doing the same thing over and over again. Right now, that seems to be the problem with Chelsea.“I look at the successful teams, and they are all ready to change their games, their tactics when things are going wrong.“Bournemouth caused problems for Chelsea that they just did not know how to cope with. To be a top team, you have to be able to adapt. Jurgen Klopp tweaks his system at Liverpool, Pep Guardiola does it at Manchester City. But I have not seen Sarri do it.Harry Maguire, Manchester UnitedLiverpool legend Nicol slams Harry Maguire’s Man United form Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Steve Nicol believes Harry Maguire has made some “horrendous mistakes” recently, and has failed to find his best form since joining Manchester United.“He sticks to a 4-3-3 system, and when he does make a change he just changes a player within the system – so it is easy for opponents.“Everyone had worked Chelsea out by November. They knew that Jorginho was the fulcrum.“So now teams drop a player onto him as Bournemouth did with David Brooks, and they stop him. Then you have N’Golo Kante not comfortable in his role on the right, and the team are unbalanced.“If you don’t adapt then you are stuttering, or even going backwards.“This was not just a one-off – there is a pattern now. This has happened to Chelsea several times this season – at Tottenham, Arsenal and now Bournemouth. And it has not been simply an unlucky 10 minutes in these matches.“This is a defining period for Sarri. He has huge league games coming up against City and Spurs. If they put up a performance like the other night they are going to be in trouble.”Chelsea will host bottom-placed side Huddersfield Town at Stamford Bridge for their next Premier League match on Saturday.🇮🇹 Maurizio Sarri locked himself in the dressing room with his @ChelseaFC players after the 4-0 loss to @AFCBournemouth.😳 He kicked his coaches out of the dressing room including Gianfranco Zola.⏰ He was in there with his players for almost an hour.📝 @MichelleOwen7 pic.twitter.com/RkaYva0Jgn— SPORF (@Sporf) January 30, 2019last_img read more
