The students, from the Wilson’s Run and Troy Basic and Infant, and Hague Primary and Infant schools, were showered with toys and gift packages, at a function held at the Falmouth cruise ship pier. The students were excited to visit the pier and interact with cruise passengers and JTB personnel. They also sang carols and demonstrated Jamaican dances. The main attraction was the arrival of “Santa” played by cruise ship passenger Kevin Johnson from Orlando, Florida. The children received gifts from Santa and had their picture taken to preserve the occasion. Visitor Relations Manager at the JTB, St. James Office, Margaret Jones, told JIS News that the Christmas treat was the first for the Falmouth port, which was officially opened this year, but was in keeping with a programme already in place for some 15 years at the Ocho Rios and Montego Bay piers.  “This is certainly a fantastic day here in Falmouth … as it is a first for this port and we are only too happy to be a part of this team of persons, who have worked to make this a success.  These children have been chosen at random in their respective schools and we hope to be engaged in doing this every year as we reach out to our children, giving them some cheer throughout the year,” Ms. Jones told JIS News. Human Resource Specialist for Oasis of the Seas, Stelian Radu, who was instrumental in sourcing all the gift packages for the event, said that he was excited by the children’s warmth and the “sparkle in their eyes as they received the toys and other gifts”. “I am very happy for today, which is a beautiful day for the kids.  I would like to thank all our partners from the shore side as well as those partners and main organisers from the ship side and we are looking forward for this to happen next year,” Mr. Radu told JIS News.last_img read more

From a ‘Shoestring Budget’ to the Big Screen! The Fresh-Faced Stars of Puffs Prep for Movie Magic

first_imgPuffs, Or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic was only supposed to play five performances at the People’s Improv Theatre in 2015. “We barely received funding of a few thousand dollars and put it up in the winter of that year,” explains playwright Matt Cox. “The best case scenario was that people would maybe come see it.”Rotate that Time Turner three years forward, and the comedy play, unofficially based off of J.K. Rowling’s blockbuster boy wizard series, is scheduled to be witnessed by countless fans in more than 600 movie theaters nationwide on May 9 and 12, courtesy of Fathom Events. The tight-knit cast, including Langston Belton, Madeleine Bundy, Jessie Cannizzaro, Nick Carrillo, A.J. Ditty, Julie Ann Earls, James Fouhey, Andy Miller, Zac Moon, Eleanor Philips and Stephen Stout, will make their silver screen debuts playing a delightful bunch of misfits. “Puffs was very much a thing built by a bunch of friends who liked a thing, and wanted to do a show with a lot of laughs and a surprising bit of heart,” continues Cox. “It’s really hard to even process where Puffs has gone and is going.”A Potter comedy play performed amongst friends, then off-Broadway, then across the country? Magic, indeed. To see Puffs in movie theaters across the country, click here. To see the show at off-Broadway’s New World Stages, click here. To find out more, watch The Broadway.com Show below. The cast of ‘Puffs’ Top Left: A.J. Ditty and Madeleine Bundy | Top Right: Stephen Stout, Eleanor Philips and Nick Carrillo | Bottom Left: Langston Belton, Zach Moon and Julie Ann Earls | Bottom Right: Andy Miller, James Fouhey and Jessie Cannizzaro “We have a long-standing partnership with National Theatre Live to bring top stage productions from the West End to U.S. cinemas, like our upcoming broadcast of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time,” explains Fathom Events CEO Ray Nutt. “We were also the first to film and broadcast Newsies. Puffs has a dedicated and passionate fanbase, so we wanted to give them the opportunity to enjoy their favorite show together.” This marks a major milestone for Puffs, but also for the future of making off-Broadway theater more accessible. It’s clear that the play resonates with audiences who hold J.K. Rowling’s phenomenon dear. And yet, Puffs is its own entity entirely. The major similarity between the two fan favorites? The message that fierce friendships conquer all.Puffs’ 11 players are pals. “It’s been awesome to get to watch this show that we made together on a shoestring budget among friends grow and become a film,” says Puffs performer Jessie Cannizzaro. Related Shows At its core, Puffs is an underdog tale that centers on the Puffs, the misfits who watched Potter slay giant snakes and battle Death Eaters during his time at Hogwarts while they well,…(maybe) got some homework done and (maybe) made a feather (or two!) levitate. “It would have been kind of terrible to be another student at that particular magic school who just wanted to learn,’” Cox says. “It was then an easy jump to focus that story on our Puffs, whom pop culture has deemed the maybe-not-so-cool-kids at magic school.”Nevertheless, the Puffs are cool in New York audiences’ books. Since the production’s premiere at the PIT, Puffs has extended many times, moving off-Broadway to the Elektra in September of 2016 and then to New World Stages, where it is currently playing, in July of 2017. The show’s undeniable popularity caught the attention of Fathom Events. It is the organization’s first New York off-Broadway production that they have chosen to share with audiences across the country. Brinksmanship…

Brinksmanship…

first_img…worked for N KoreaWell…who woulda guessed? Looks like the “talks” between Trump and Kim Jong Un will be coming off after all! That’s the President of the United States – the largest economy in the world, weighing in at US$18.5 TRILLION – sitting across the table with the boss of N Korea whose country ranks 125th in the world with a GDP of only US$18 billion!! And with this meeting, N Korea has won the battle Jong UN’s grandfather launched 50 years ago when he embarked on a nuclear programme! Not many folks remember the Korean War – but it was a VERY BIG THING – trust you Eyewitness!! Or if you don’t, aske GECOM’s Justice Patterson – he’s certainly old enough to have a first-hand recollection!! It started in 1950 when N Korean troops moved into South Korea and the US jumped in on the latter’s side, to halt the North’s advance. When the tide swung and they’d penetrated far into North Korea to approach the Chinese border, the latter poured in hundreds of thousands of troops and most of the world thought it was the beginning of WWIII!Even though the US THREATENED to use her nuclear weapons, they didn’t – but the threat persuaded the Chinese to sign an Armistice in 1953. North Korea obviously has never forgotten about the persuasive power of Nuclear weapons!! A “demilitarised” zone was created between the North and South but the US stationed troops in the South that are there to this day. Interestingly, there was never an OFFICIAL declaration of the END of the war – and this might be one of the takeaways from the Singapore meeting.N Korea swore to bring the US to the table and now they’ve done so!! Their tactic of squeezing their third world economy to develop nuclear ballistic capabilities has paid off. So what are we to expect if the talks do come off – which, knowing Trump, still ain’t a cert? Well, there that official end of war statement – and who knows maybe the release of some GI who’ve been wandering in the backwoods of Kaesong County. But seriously, the Americans will want Kim Jong Un to demilitarise – that is, destroy any and all nuclear weapons as well as pull back troops from the near the demilitarised zone. This, Kim has said it could do – if the US would pull all its troops from South Korea, as well as remove sanctions. But dear reader, don’t expect any of this to happen anytime soon. We’re dealing with two ego-driven fellas who just love all the attention the world’s giving them. They’re going to milk this for all its worth!! And then they’ll do it for the Nobel Peace Prize!!…on elections mechanismFolks used to wonder why the PPP claimed elections could be rigged by the PNC, even when they – the PPP – were in office. Well, remember Burnham’s favourite aphorism: there are many ways to kill a cat, even though infecting it with “mange” was his favourite!! Just so, there are many ways to rig an election – even though soldiers collecting ballot boxes might’ve been his favourite!!And we come to the present imbroglio over the hiring practices of GECOM and its consequences – as pointed out by Robeson Benn. Unlike what Alexander asserted about the overweening dominance of African Guyanese in GECOM (forget about that “Mixed” claim!!) being due to the same factors they dominate the public service that’s a load of crock. GECOM is a recent creature and has received equal number of applicants from Indian and African Guyanese. GECOM’s CEO Lowenfield, an old Army officer who’s a dyed-in-the wool PNC.He weeds out the former by controlling the required examination!! Review those exam papers, Robeson!!…and Judicial appointmentsSo why isn’t your Eyewitness surprised Granger says he ain’t changing his mind about having Ex-Army officer Benjamin being the next Chancellor? He’s just singing that song he hummed at Queens in 1964, “Wha’ Cha Gonna Do ‘bout It??”last_img read more

Disney Cruise Line News — Week of January 19, 2019

Show times are available in your Personal Navigator or the official Disney Cruise Line app.Captain’s Log: Important Tips and Information“I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad.Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory.I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am.Otherwise, I never touch it – unless I’m thirsty.” ~ Lilly BollingerIf you immediately recognize this quote, you may in fact be a frequent visitor of Pink on the Disney Dream! (No judgment – I am too.) Pink is a champagne bar that can be found in The District, exclusive to the Dream. The color scheme is largely, as you may have guessed, pink, entwined with gold and silver. Behind the bar is a gorgeous backdrop, and I’m not just referring to the bottles in the silver buckets. Glass “bubbles” rise up from the center display, setting the theme of this entire space – you are transported right into a glass of bubbly. Even the light fixtures from the ceiling are upside down champagne flutes. Seating ranges from sleek barstools at the pink pearlized bar, to elegant tufted chairs and benches along the wall.Speaking of the wall….remember when Dumbo took a swig from the “grown-ups barrel” and found himself in the company of dancing pink elephants? Look closely at the lighted bubbles on the wall…and you too may start seeing pink elephants dancing about. Just don’t mistake it as an effect of any questionable beverages here, because there are no questionable choices here! And now speaking of beverages… The menu here is largely, of course, champagne! There’s a lovely variety of options, both by the glass and by the bottle. Unique champagne-centered cocktails are also on the menu if you are looking for something different. Try the Icy Pop – a glass of Moet & Chandon Ice Imperial with a popsicle plopped in the glass! For those who don’t prefer bubbles, there are some wines available as well.In the evenings, when this space is just for adults, you can often find live music here. Enjoy tunes from a live pianist or violinist, fitting with the theme of this lounge.Pink is definitely one of my top favorite lounges across the fleet – have you popped in here? Bumper maize crop for SA

Bumper maize crop for SA

first_imgA field of maize, known in South Africaas mealies, on a farm in the EasternFree State.(Image: MediaClubSouthAfrica.com. For morefree images, visit the image library) MEDIA CONTACTS • Priscilla Tsotso SehooleMedia liaison officer, Department of Agriculture+27 12 319 6843Janine ErasmusSouth Africa has achieved its biggest maize crop in 29 years, weighing in at around 13-million tons. This equates to about 4.8 tons per hectare and closely rivals the record 1981/82 yield of 14.42-million tons.Despite a worrying dry spell at the start of the growing season, the bumper crop is attributed to better farming techniques, above average rainfall, increased use of biotechnology and a move away from sunflowers and wheat, resulting in an 8.2% increase in the number of maize plants in the ground. This is the third year in a row that South Africa has reaped an above-average maize crop. Around 7.8-million tons is white maize and the balance is yellow, which is mainly used for animal feed. This means that not only will the country have ample supplies for its residents, who consume around 9-tons of the grain annually, but it will be able to export about 2-million tons in both white and yellow varieties. To date most of this year’s exportable maize produce has gone to drought-stricken areas of Kenya. About 3-million tons will leave the country next year.South Africa is the continent’s biggest maize producer. Last year’s harvest brought in 12.05-million tons of which 1.9-million tons was carried over to 2010.Crop estimatesThe Department of Agriculture’s Crop Estimates Committee is tasked with releasing crop estimates on a regular basis. To do this, the committee uses geographic information science (GIS) and an innovative, locally developed process called the Producer Independent Crop Estimate System (Pices). This involves a number of steps including the use of satellite imagery, obtained from the France-based Spot Image Group, to digitally establish boundaries of crop fields, the selection of sampling points at random, and visual surveys – using light aircraft – to obtain crop data.Once the aerial survey is complete, the information obtained is used to statistically calculate crop estimates. This system eliminates dependency on producers’ data, which has often been inconsistent in the past. The Pices system has digitised about 13-million hectares of crop land in all nine of South Africa’s provinces, and is constantly monitored to ensure that data is current. According to a GIS expert, this area can be covered in about two months by just three field observation teams. But the committee’s forecast is not as optimistic for the 2010/11 season, as plantings will decline mainly due to a drop in the maize price both locally and internationally, and more severe El Niño conditions. This climate phenomenon is expected to bring good rain in spring, but drier conditions in the middle of the warm season may even lead to a drought in some areas. In this case, commercial farmers have the option of switching to hardier crops, such as sunflowers. Maize prices are lower because of the stronger rand, the excellent current yield and the forecast of a similarly plentiful harvest in the US.While some other Southern African countries have also enjoyed a good maize season, a drought in neighbouring Zimbabwe has placed extreme strain on this year’s crop.Staple foodMaize (Zea mays) is a grass and a staple food of people on the African continent, as well as the most common livestock feed grain. In South Africa, which is also the breadbasket of the Southern African region, the maize sector comprises both commercial and small-scale farmers, mostly in the North West, Free State, Mpumalanga and northern KwaZulu-Natal provinces.Maize is also used in the production of biofuel and starch, which itself is used in a number of products ranging from paint to cosmetics.Other major crops in South Africa include wheat, sunflowers, sugar, fruit and nuts.Media Liaison OfficerMs Priscilla Tsotso Sehoole (Acting)Mail:Private Bag X250, PRETORIA, 0001Street:No 20, Agriculture Place, Block DA, 1st Floor, cnr Beatrix Street and Soutpansberg Road, Arcadia, PRETORIATel:(012) 319 6843Fax:(012) 321 8558E-mail:[email protected]last_img read more

Amazon Bringing Its Daily Deals Service to New York City

Amazon Bringing Its Daily Deals Service to New York City

first_imgAmazon is bringing its daily deals Groupon competitor to the largest city in the United States. AmazonLocal, which debuted in select cities including Seattle, Los Angeles and Chicago in early August, is coming to New York City. With Groupon’s IPO lingering, Amazon looks to be moving aggressively to impede the daily deals giant’s momentum.Since New York City is so big, Amazon says that the initial rollout will be for most of Manhattan (downtown, midtown, uptown including upper east and west sides) and Brooklyn. Amazon made no mention of the Bronx, Queens or Staten Island. Coming to New York City is a significant move for AmazonLocal and perhaps a precursor to a nation-wide rollout. Are you more inclined to use an established e-commerce company like Amazon for daily deals over startups like Groupon or LivingSocial? In addition to its daily deals offerings for physical locations such as spas, restaurants, cupcake bakeries or yoga studios, AmazonLocal will offer deals through the company’s subsidiary sites such as Myhabit.com and 6pm.com, as well as the main Amazon.com homepage. It remains to be seen if the daily deals phenomenon will retain traction among consumers. Groupon created the industry and has seen it grow wildly in the last several years but there are signs of consumer fatigue. Yet, Groupon continues to make aggressive moves to expand its core features and geographic range. We will see in late September or October, when Groupon’s IPO day comes, how investors rate not only the company but the daily deals space as a whole. Amazon probably likes what it has seen with the AmazonLocal product line to move into New York City. As we noted earlier in August when Amazon first rolled out its daily deals service, it has some significant advantages over Groupon. It has a mature infrastructure, the payment information of nearly all its members and experience in dealing with local merchants. dan rowinski Tags:#Amazon#e-commerce#NYT#web Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…center_img 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts last_img read more

4 lessons learned from 200,000 Amazon beauty, personal care product pages

4 lessons learned from 200,000 Amazon beauty, personal care product pages

first_imgNearly 70 percent of consumers say they search for and purchase beauty and personal products on Amazon. This will come as no surprise to anyone watching or involved in the space. Increasingly, consumers have been opting for digital convenience from the beauty and personal products category. As new models disrupt the space, from subscribe and save options, digital-native vertical brands, and Amazon’s private label Basic Care products, it seems established brands have been hit the hardest when it comes to losing market share.Given the importance of your digital shelf performance, and the rapid pace of Amazon’s dominance of the consumables market overall, I took a close look at what was winning on the website as part of my work at my company Salsify. As in many markets, the tactics to successfully sell beauty and personal care on Amazon differ slightly depending on the price point. But after analyzing more than 200,000 product pages on Amazon, I noted four overarching lessons. Many product pages fail to provide ample content for shoppers, giving beauty and personal care brands a significant opportunity to win in the category. Let’s look at those four lessons. Posted on 13th September 2018Digital Marketing FacebookshareTwittertweetGoogle+share 4 lessons learned from 200,000 Amazon beauty, personal care product pagesYou are here: Lesson 1: Image is everythingConsumers expect more images, even for low-priced products. Be sure to provide several high-quality images of the product that demonstrate what the packaging looks like, lists any key ingredient information or dosing information, shows the product in use, and provides shoppers a sense of the size or options that your product may come in.Across price points on Amazon, I saw that ‘Top Performer’ pages (those within the top 10 percent of sales rank) had a minimum of double the image count of ‘Poor Performer’ pages (bottom 10 percent of sales rank).Even basic hygiene goods categories with products like cotton swabs or toothpaste priced under $10 had an average of 4.5 images for top performers.Use the brand products you have today to help your shoppers see exactly what they are buying and lend more credibility to the page. In addition, I saw many brands reflecting the answers to commonly asked questions or spotlighting key features of the product in an image to catch shoppers attention to primary reasons to buy.Lesson 2: Wisdom is a crowdTo beat your competitors, get your review count into the triple digits. An overwhelming trend across top-performers is the number of reviews their products receive. This clearly plays an enormous role in winning buyer trust and answering feature and benefit questions for buyers. Our analysis showed that rather than upping bullet count, having hundreds of reviews on a product page was an enormous factor in winning sales. For example, in trusted skin, hair care treatments and cleansers priced $50 – $99.99, Top Performers had an average of 211 product reviews. The low performers in this category had an average of 11.3 product reviews. While Amazon has clear policies against incentivizing or paying for product reviews, many brands are able to improve their counts with basic post-purchase follow-up. Include a request for reviews in packaging and any post-purchase emails.Lesson 3: It doesn’t take a five-star ratingFollowing on the previous lesson, while review count matters, star ratings are not as critical. So don’t sweat the star ratings. If your product averages four stars on Amazon, you are in good company in the beauty and personal care category.Across every price point, there was a mere 0.5 difference in average ratings from top performers to low performers. In fact, regardless of whether shoppers were spending $10 or $99.99 for a product, the average star rating for top performers was 4.2. Products under $10 or over $100 had an average star rating of 4.1.The data in this part of the analysis can be used to highlight the importance of collecting buyer feedback and responding to it more than getting high marks across the board.Lesson 4: Bare minimum page is the baselineMost brands are doing the bare minimum when it comes to product content. There is an enormous opportunity for you to dominate the market. When I looked across the data, product pages in the beauty and personal care category had one image and five bullet points in the product description. Based on my experience and our company research, this is categorically the wrong approach. Top performers across every price point are using images and outstanding content to tell the full brand story rather than relying on bullets, titles or description length.By investing in product content beyond the minimum required by Amazon, brands have the opportunity to increase Sales Rank and market share on the website at a critical moment of its continued growth.Top-performing products generally have product pages that quickly give consumers a robust view of what they might buy — particularly through imagery and reviews. The post 4 lessons learned from 200,000 Amazon beauty, personal care product pages appeared first on Marketing Land. From our sponsors: 4 lessons learned from 200,000 Amazon beauty, personal care product pagescenter_img HomeDigital Marketing4 lessons learned from 200,000 Amazon beauty, personal care product pages Related postsLytics now integrates with Google Marketing Platform to enable customer data-informed campaigns14th December 2019The California Consumer Privacy Act goes live in a few short weeks — Are you ready?14th December 2019ML 2019121313th December 2019Global email benchmark report finds email isn’t dead – it’s essential13th December 2019Keep your LinkedIn advertising strategy focused in 202012th December 20192019 benchmark report: brand vs. non-brand traffic in Google Shopping12th December 2019last_img read more
