first_imgTo many, pinball machines are relics of a bygone age of noisy, crowded arcades where people waited in line to get their hand on the flippers. Many a quarter was gobbled up by pinball machines worldwide, as they used to be the staple of the arcade economy. With video gaming having moved to the home, the pinball machine has gone the way of the enthusiast, with collectors snapping up any classic or memorable tables that go up for sale.Recently however, there has been a movement to revive the pinball machine as a viable form of entertainment. Combining some modern technology with the classic arcade play pinball wizards will recognize and love. The movement is being led by legendary pinball designer and creator John Popadiuk, a man who started at an early age creating tables out of rubber bands and boards for his neighborhood buddies.Popadiuk’s career has spanned many years and includes now famous tables made for companies like Bally, Disney, and LucasArts. Currently teaching interactive toy making in Chicago, Popadiuk has started PinballInventor.org to create a studio for custom pinball machine innovation.
